The Original Easter Egg
How It Started
In April 2019, when Avengers: Endgame came out, Google hid a surprise in Search. If you looked up “Thanos,” a golden Infinity Gauntlet appeared in the Knowledge Panel, the information box beside the results.
What It Did
Tapping the gauntlet made Thanos snap his fingers. Half of the results crumbled into dust, with an animation and a sound effect, and the number of results dropped by about half. Tapping the gauntlet again brought the missing results back, as if you had turned back time with the Time Stone.
Impact and Reach
Coverage by TIME and technology publications highlighted the effect during the release of Avengers: Endgame. The disappearing results and reduced count translated the snap from Avengers: Infinity War into Search, while a second click reversed it.
Its Discontinuation
Google retired the Thanos Snap Easter egg in 2020.
The Restored Experience
What’s Different Here
The Infinity Gauntlet snaps, half the results turn to dust, and the count drops with them. Once the animation finishes, another click activates the Time Stone: the missing results return and the count rises back to its original number.
The Easter Egg Experience
Click the button above, then find the golden Infinity Gauntlet beside Thanos’s name. Click it to hear the snap and watch half the results drift away as dust while the result count falls. Once the animation finishes, click the same gauntlet to bring the missing results back.
How to Try It
- Click the button above to open the restored search page.
- Find the golden Infinity Gauntlet beside Thanos’s name.
- Click the gauntlet and listen for the snap.
- Watch half the results crumble into dust as the result count drops.
- Wait for the animation to finish, then click the same gauntlet to restore the page.
The result count is part of the illusion too. It falls as the results disappear, then returns to its original number when you undo the snap.
Final Thoughts
The snap is only half of the restored effect. Once the results have turned to dust, another click on the gauntlet activates the Time Stone animation and brings them back.
